Our Commitment to the Environment
We continue to prioritize environmental stewardship in the way we operate. These priorities include minimizing our carbon footprint, examining our climate risks, and engaging our employees to maximize their collective impact. We believe transparency is vital to our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts, and by committing to be transparent in our sustainability initiatives and progress, we ensure UKG paves a sustainable path for our people.
Our Carbon Emissions
We continuously measure, manage, and minimize energy use and resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to be good stewards of our planet. By partnering with our employees (U Krewers), customers, and communities, we drive progress toward the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. We strive to be a global leader in sustainability and environmental protection to enable our customers, vendors, employees, and others to reduce their environmental impact through our actions and technologies.
We performed our initial GHG inventory in 2021, based on 2020 emissions, and have since improved the process to better represent our global footprint. We conducted a global GHG inventory to establish a baseline for 2022 emissions and develop effective GHG reduction and emission targets. With clearer and more accurate data from our inventory, we set near- and long-term goals for reducing our footprint.
In 2023, UKG committed to setting robust climate goals in alignment with the Science-Based Targets initiative. Our science-based emissions reduction targets span across the entire value chain and are consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5° C above preindustrial levels.
Between now and 2030 will be a critical time to reduce our impact on the environment, to limit global temperature increase to 1.5° Celsius. Our 2023 commitment to SBTi ensures that UKG has a sustainability path that aligns with the latest science and best efforts to reduce global climate impacts. Our climate goals encompass all three emission scopes and are aligned with a 1.5° C future.
- We aim to create a well-rounded approach to sustainability, incorporating our entire value chain into our initiatives to support the sustainability journey of our customers.
- We believe transparency is the key to success in our sustainability efforts, and we will continue to regularly report on our progress towards our climate goals and will adapt to new methods, technologies, and best practices in our emissions-reduction journey.
Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy
Our strategy around environmental sustainability is designed to be flexible and adapt to hot spots in our carbon emissions footprint and environmental impact areas.
- Climate Risk Assessment and Scenario Analysis
UKG is committed to understanding and managing the climate-related risks and opportunities that are facing our company. In 2023, we completed an initial climate risk scenario assessment and scenario analysis in alignment with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). We completed this exercise to enhance our understanding of the impact that climate change could have on our business, with the following objectives:
- To define the most material physical and transition risks for UKG
- To identify the most appropriate climate scenarios to be used for climate scenario analysis
The results from this work are informing our strategic decisions and helping us prepare for the potential impacts of climate change, in line with the recommendations of the TCFD.
- Sustainable Workspaces
At UKG, we understand that our environment influences the choices we make. By prioritizing healthy work environments, we aim to encourage healthier choices supported by the space around us.
Keeping to that promise, we have:
- Optimized our office-based footprint and aligned with customer and employee needs
- Completed significant energy efficiency improvements in our global office locations
- Updated our procurement and travel policies, with an emphasis on physical safety and environmentally conscious travel choices
- Introduced UKG-sponsored transportation programs, including shuttle services, incentives for carpooling and/or electric vehicle usage, shared-ride services, bike racks, and a general wellness program that encourages biking and walking as healthy alternatives
- Cultivated in-office greenery such as living walls and live plants by partnering with local nurseries in many office locations around the world
- Utilized plants that absorb volatile organic compounds to improve air quality
- Prioritized recycled, upcycled, and renewable materials for office interiors, including furniture, flooring, and decor
- Continued recycling programs around the world and expanded guidance for in-office and at-home recycling via best-practice guides for employees
- Employee Engagement
Environmental Sustainability Training: Because knowledge is power, we are executing on our goal of expanding environmental training and education to all U Krewers. Training specific to environmental sustainability has been offered to our internal environmental working group to date.
Sustainability Working Groups: To better engage employees, working groups focused on various sustainability topics were formed to act as internal task forces for environmental initiatives and communications across the organization. We have worked to enhance our company policies to incorporate environmental impact in our operations. From our Global Travel and Expense Policy to Global Environmental Policy and a Third Party Code of Conduct, we aim to instill our environmental commitments in all areas of UKG.
Environmental Sustainability on UKG Today – All-employee Intranet Site: The launch of the Environmental Sustainability page/group on our local intranet site creates a central location where all U Krewers can review content and updates on our sustainability projects, policies, and trainings.
